Overcharge protection for electric motorcycles (e-bikes) | Case study of using Surface mount fuse (protective elements)

Protecting the battery and circuits in electric motorcycles
Battery-powered electric motorcycles have become increasingly popular around the world in recent years due to their energy-saving and low cost.

Electric motorcycles are equipped with high-voltage, large-capacity lithium-ion batteries, but circuit protection is important as abnormalities can occur due to shocks, high temperatures, etc. Dexerials has developed and supplies Surface mount fuse called "SCP (Self Control Protector)" as secondary protection equipment for electric motorcycle batteries.

Application

High voltage compatibility
Dexerials' SCP meets the demands of high-power electric motorcycles, improving power output and long-distance driving, and contributing to the realization of higher performance electric motorcycles.

Safety in emergencies
When there is a high possibility that the battery may become uncontrollable due to some kind of problem, the charging/discharging circuit is cut off to ensure the safety of the battery.

Product characteristics

A heater is built into the element, allowing for arbitrary shutoff.

When the secondary protection IC detects an abnormality such as overcharging, it provides a "secondary protection" function that generates heat from the built-in heater and actively melts the fuse element to physically cut off the circuit.

Irreversible circuit interruption due to physical interruption

When an abnormality first appears, the circuit is physically cut off, preventing the battery from recovering once it has been compromised.

Compact and lightweight for automatic mounting

Dexerials' SCP increases the design freedom of battery management systems (BMS) for batteries used in power tools, garden tools, and cleaners, where components must be mounted in a limited space.
