Dexerials Corporation (Headquarters: Shimotsuke-shi, Tochigi, Representative Director and President: Yoshihisa Shinya, hereinafter “Dexerials”) announce that it will fully begin to build a system for creating comprehensive ideas regarding new uses of products with generative AI technologies, with the aim of continuing to accelerate the development of next-generation products in its R&D efforts.

Dexerials began operations in 2012*1. Since then, it has supported the evolution of technology by developing products that anticipate social and technological changes, by constantly taking on the challenges of creating something that has never existed before, under its Corporate Philosophy: “Integrity; Have Integrity and Sincerity.” Currently, Dexerials develops, manufactures, and distributes electronic components, adhesive materials, optical materials, and other functional materials that are indispensable in smartphones, laptops, and other electronic devices, as well as in automobiles whose electrification is increasing. The company operates 8 manufacturing and sales locations in Japan (including those of its subsidiaries) and 11 overseas.

To create ideas regarding new uses for products in the product development process, it is necessary to have correct understanding of complicated information and elements such as market information accumulated by the company (hereinafter “Needs”) as well as information about technologies owned by the company (hereinafter “Seeds”), and then create an idea that is a good match with both Needs and Seeds. Although these processes are important, it is highly dependent on individual skills and the creation of an idea regarding new uses for products takes both time and labor because both quality and quantity are demanded in the initial phase. These have been a challenge for us to overcome.
To solve these issues, Dexerials began validation using generative AI technologies from Stockmark Inc. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo, President: Tatsu Hayashi, hereinafter ”Stockmark”) in 2024 to build a tool for creating ideas in the search for new uses for products. In this validation, Dexerials was able to confirm the precision of the tool such as (1) AI’s understanding Dexerials’ language and expressions and handling internal and external information that is updated daily, (2) extracting accurate information from Dexerials’ own research reports and structuring the information and (3) proposing matches with Dexerials’ technologies based on market information and trends in society (Needs).
Through the construction of the system, Dexerials will build a tool that will create and propose many ideas on new uses for products comprehensively, promptly, with high quality, the creation of which is not possible with human capabilities alone, aiming to further enhance the product development capabilities of Dexerials.

Points of reform

① Building a knowledge graph that makes it possible to understand the unique expressions used in the company

To discover with high speed and precision, new uses for the company’s technologies from a vast amount of information, it is necessary to have AI understand not only the meanings of words but also the relationships between the words and unique expressions that are used internally. Dexerials will use knowledge graph technology from Stockmark to build its own unique knowledge graph that is also able to handle internal and external information being updated daily, with the goal of enabling quick, high-precision searches for new uses for products.

② Optimizing research with accurate information extraction from proprietary research reports and a structuring technology

Dexerials’ proprietary research reports, which are used to understand market and technology trends and analyze and identify potential customer needs, were presented in various formats and included complicated layouts of diagrams, images and other elements. To convert them into searchable data, Dexerials extracted and structured the data. This makes it possible to use even visual information, which tended to be overlooked before, so that business opportunities and needs can be identified and understood and the searches for new uses for products can be more precise.

③ Search for new uses for products based on Seeds and the proposal of matches and the creation of ideas based on Needs

Through this experiment, Dexerials has made it possible to propose good matches between Seeds and market Needs, in addition to searching for new uses for products based on Seeds. This will enable Dexerials to not only to expand the uses of Seeds but also understand technology proposals optimized for Needs. Moving forward, Dexerials will improve the precision of matching Seeds and Needs and the accuracy of information presentation which will help determine business feasibility, aiming to introduce the technology to its operations in full scale.
